Thomas P. Smith, Organist and Choirmaster

Thomas Smith joined the staff of Christ Church in September 2015, having previously served as Director of Music and Organist at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Bethesda, Maryland, where he oversaw an extensive music program. His responsibilities at Christ Church include playing the organ for all liturgies, conducting the professional choir, assisting in the planning and preparation of worship, and supervising all other musical activities within the parish. A native of suburban Philadelphia, Tom holds degrees in organ performance and church music from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. His primary teachers have been John Binsfeld, John Walker, and Donald Sutherland. In addition to his work at Christ Church, Tom is the Assistant Chapel Musician at Virginia Theological Seminary, Alexandria, Virginia. He has twice served as guest lecturer in church music at his alma mater, the Peabody Conservatory. Tom is a devout Episcopalian and a fervent conservator of the Anglican liturgical and musical traditions, which, he believes, can serve as valuable tools for outreach, evangelism, education, and formation now more than ever.
